Energy Garden is a city-wide community gardening and community energy project that plans to transform 50 train stations across London by 2017; the stations are to become destinations for gardening and renewable energy systems. Agamemnon Otero MBE the Founder of Energy Garden and CEO of Repowering explained how the project can help to engage new customers while also creating social, financial and environmental benefits including a 20 year revenue stream for communities in need. As well as gardens the project will see the stations fitted out with energy bars that provide power for mobile devices and information on the likes of garden centres, seasonal plants to commuters and station visitors. Consumer spending is expected to drop considerably in 2017 and 2018, rising slightly in 2019 and recovering more in 2020. Growers and garden centres will see a shift in seasonal employment and labour from the EU. Moving goods across borders will see a double whammy hit with both high import and tariff costs. There is one solid benefit to be had, the falling UK pound has delivered a boost for UK tourism, including the domestic holiday market, with tourist spend for July up by 7% compared to 2015.

Gardens will adapt by changing in style, by having new species/cultivars, by focusing on water capture with automated irrigation and potential legislation. Garden retail can expect an increase in patio type plantings and more importance towards resilience. Lawns may be replaced by meadows, water could be used in a recreational way to relieve heat and plants may be used for screening and shade. Pest and disease issues are likely to rise. It is hoped that the beneficial side of landscape plants will be more widely recognised as they start to be increasingly used to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
