Umberslade Nurseries Umberslade Road, Selly Oak Details Formerly Rathbone Garden Centre, Umberslade Nurseries in Selly Oak is a Queen Alexandra College (QAC) enterprise selling bedding plants, shrubs and lots of other garden sundries to raise money for the college which helps visually impaired and autistic students. Pacific Nurseries Chester Road, Streetly Details This independent, family-run business has been in Streetly for over 40 years and offers not only a garden centre but also a deli farm shop and popular café. Most of the plants are homegrown, and they also stock a range of giftware, oak furniture and garden furniture. Pacific Nurseries in Streetly 3. Hodgehill Garden Centre Birmingham Road, Kidderminster Details Starting out selling a few tomatoes from a shed 35 years ago, the family behind Hodgehill now have a plant centre, butchers, farm shop and florist. They sell predominantly local produce and support small growers. There’s also a lovely coffee shop too and animals for the children to see in the fields at the Kidderminster site. 4. Akamba Garden Centre Tythe Barn Lane, Shirley Details A little bit of Africa in Shirley! Akamba features two acres of exotic palms, African fair trade art and wooden animals. Launched in 2002 by Olympic speed skater Chris Canaan, the amazing plants at Akamba are often cold grown without the aid of greenhouses to helps them thrive in our chilly British winters. Over the years, Chris has worked on many TV gardening programmes such as Challenge Tommy Walsh, Garden Invaders and has featured on BBC Gardeners’ World. Botanical Gardens Westbourne Road, Edgbaston Details Entry to the shop at the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston is free and there are plenty of indoor and outdoor plants to buy. There’s also a range of greetings cards, toys, stationery and gifts. 6. Ashwood Nurseries Ashwood Lower Lane, Kingswinford Details Situated in a canal-side setting in lovely open countryside, Ashwood offers a traditional plant nursery, garden centre, gift shop and tea room overlooking attractive landscaped gardens. Having been taught the principles of gardening by his grandfather, John Massey acquired Ashwood Nurseries as a teenager in 1968, straight from school. Hilltop Garden Centre Shilton Lane, Shilton, Coventry Details An independent, family-run garden centre, Hilltop Garden Centre in Coventry offers plants, gifts, water features and outdoor lighting. There’s also a new aquatics section too. 9. Earlswood Garden & Landscape Centre Forshaw Heath Road, Earlswood, Solihull Details Set on a seven-and-a-half acre site in Solihull, Earlswood offers everything you could need for your garden from greenhouses to garden furniture and paving to play equipment. They manufacture their own fencing panels and sheds on site and offer made to measure and fitting services. There’s also a coffee shop. Cypress Nursery Powke Lane, Rowley Regis Details Cypress Nursery is a small family-run business set in a one-and-a-half acre oasis of olde worlde charm in Rowley Regis, in the heart of the Black Country. The nursery has been in the family for three generations, formerly run by Monica Bennett, who was known all over the world for her geraniums. It is currently run by her son Bruce and his wife Anne. 11. Whitlenge Gardens Whitlenge Lane, Hartlebury, Worcestershire Details Garden designer, Keith Southall, bought Whitlenge House Cottage 30 years ago and began a life’s work of transforming the site into the place of beauty and tranquillity. There is a five acre specimen plant nursery, play area and tea room. Entry to the gardens costs £3 but it’s free to go into the nursery and tea rooms. A nice family day out in Worcestershire. Planters at Tamworth Woodlands Farm, Trinity Road, Freasley, Tamworth Details Planters started off selling Christmas trees from the back of a cart almost 25 years ago. The Garden Centre in Tamworth was soon built and year upon year Planters got bigger and better with celebrities from TV’s Coronation Street coming to open new buildings. As well as selling everything you need for the garden and home, together with a cafe, there’s also a Sky Trail Adventure giving all the family the chance to experience high level thrills on a two-level rope, bridge and beam course – the only one of its kind in a garden centre in Britain. Webbs West Hagley and Webbs, Wychbold Details Webbs is a family business offering everything for the dedicated and occasional gardener alike, as well as providing a great place to visit for non gardeners with lots of great events over Easter from circuses and fairground rides to bee-keeping courses and storytelling sessions. There are lots of pets, plus a falconry centre at Hagley and a range of reptiles for sale at Wychbold. Cafes feature at both, together with gift and clothes shops too. Rowberry’s Nursery Lower Chaddesley Corbett, Kidderminster Started in 1977 by Chris Rowberry, who grew and sold plants from his home, the family now farm over 300 acres, have a large area of glass houses and polytunnels for bedding plants, shrubs, perennials, fuchsias and more. There’s also a butchers and restaurant. The tea rooms at Rowberry’s Garden Centre in Chaddersley Corbett. 15. Studley Garden Centre Henley Road, Mappleborough Green, Studley Details The land at Studley Garden Centre has been a horticultural site for over 30 years, providing customers with plants and shrubs, fruit trees, gardening products, home and lifestyle and garden furniture. Nottcutts Stratford Road, Shirley, Solihull Details Everything is designed to make a trip to the garden centre easy at Nottcutts, from its extensive covered area for all weather shopping to its soil testing service and carry to the car facility. There’s also wide range of homeware, gifts, a kitchen shop, craft department, a pet centre and restaurant at the Solihull site. Hall’s Garden Supplies Chester Road, New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield Details Hall’s has been run by the same family for the past 60 years. They have one of the largest aquatics superstores in the country. There’s also a florists and coffee shop. The centre in Sutton Coldfield has appeared on Gardeners’ World Live and has supplied products to TV programmes such as DIY SOS, the Paul O’Grady Show, Meet the Kumars and the Gadget Show. Clent Nurseries Bromsgrove Road, Clent, Stourbridge Details Clent nurseries is a family owned and run business which started as a small concern growing tomatoes back in 1976. It is now one of the most popular garden centres in the area, offering homegrown plants and a thriving cafe. They also sell garden furniture, gifts and water features at the Stourbridge site.
