Garden Centres Lancashire

Pimbo Garden Centre Pimbo Garden Centre is based in the rural outskirts of West Lancashire near Skelmersdale. The Garden Centre is run by David and Andrew Rigby, who inherited the business from their parents. Although the Garden Centre was successful, it was very seasonal. During the spring and summer, they were incredibly busy, but the winter months were very quiet and they were not able to offer year-round employment, which made staff retention difficult. They had no facilities for their customers and were often asked if they served food and drinks. The brothers did a survey of their customers to find out whether they would use a coffee shop if one was installed and whether it would encourage customers to visit during the winter months. The feedback was unanimous and so they started looking at creating a new coffee shop. They found out about the rural funding through membership of a group of garden centres, as one of the other members had installed a successful café at her garden centre. After contacting their Development Officer, they received the guidance and support they needed to make an application. Andrew and David applied for the funding, followed the procurement guidelines and obtained all the relevant documentation. Andrew said: “We were delighted to be awarded £70,000 towards the cost of development. It was a slow process but without the funding, we would not have been able to make the investment into the business. We have created 6.5 jobs and we now employ staff on a permanent rather than a seasonal contract. The first few years were quite difficult as it was a learning curve for us but the coffee shop and farm shop are now profitable and we have a great team of staff working for us.” Get in touch If you’re interested in applying for funding Enquire now or contact us for an informal chat.
